How to use this sheet
- Draw a bar model: one bar for the smaller amount, and the same bar repeated for "times as many."
- Have the child say the comparison as a sentence before writing an equation.
- Mix in a "more than" problem by hand and ask the child how it is different.
Common mistakes
- Adding when the problem says "times as many", so 3 times as many as 4 becomes 7. Draw the bars.
- Multiplying when the problem says "more than". "5 more than 4" is 9, not 20.
- Putting the larger amount into the wrong part of the equation when the smaller one is missing.
