See the equal sign as "the same as": tell whether equations such as 6 = 6 and 4 + 1 = 5 + 2 are true, find the missing number in any place (8 + ? = 11, 5 = ? - 3), and use the order and grouping properties to add.

How to use this sheet
- Read the equal sign as "is the same as" every time, aloud, while the child works.
- For a true or false equation, have the child work out each side separately and write its value underneath.
- Use a pan balance or a drawing of one: both sides must weigh the same.
Common mistakes
- Thinking the equal sign means "write the answer next", so 7 = 3 + 4 is called false. Both sides just need the same value.
- For 8 + 4 = ☐ + 5, writing 12 in the box. That makes the right side 17. Find the value of the left side, then the number that matches it.
- Adding all the numbers in a row, so 5 + 2 = ☐ + 3 gets a 10. Work out each side separately.
