Solve two-step equations such as 3x + 4 = 19, then equations such as 3(x − 2) = 2x + 5 by multiplying out the parentheses, collecting like terms and doing the same thing to both sides, and tell when an equation has one solution, none or infinitely many.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child simplify each side first: distribute and combine like terms.
- Get the variable on one side, then the numbers on the other, one step per line.
- Check every answer by putting it into the original equation, both sides.
Common mistakes
- Moving a term to the other side without changing its sign. Do the same operation to both sides instead of "moving".
- Distributing a negative to the first term only, so −2(x − 3) becomes −2x − 3.
- Saying "no solution" when the variables cancel and a true statement is left, such as 4 = 4. That means infinitely many solutions.
