How to use this sheet
- Have the child find the vowels first and mark them. Each syllable has one vowel sound.
- Split the word with a line, read each part, then put the parts together.
- If the first try does not make a real word, have the child try the vowel sound the other way, long or short.
Common mistakes
- Splitting a word between two letters that make one sound, such as between the s and h in "fishing".
- Counting vowels instead of vowel sounds, so "boat" is called two syllables. The team oa is one sound.
- Reading every syllable with a short vowel. An open syllable, which ends in a vowel, usually has a long sound, as in "ba-by".
