Know how print works: read words from left to right and top to bottom, see that spaces separate words, tell a letter from a word and a word from a sentence, and find the first word, the capital letter and the end mark of a sentence.

How to use this sheet
- Have the child point under each word with a finger as you read the sentence aloud together.
- Before the sheet, show the same thing in a real book: where to start, which way to go, and where to go next.
- For counting words, have the child put a finger in each space. The spaces show where each word ends.
Common mistakes
- Counting letters or syllables instead of words, so "the cat" is counted as 6. Point to the spaces.
- Going back to the start of the same line at the end of a line, instead of to the next line down.
- Pointing to one word for each spoken syllable, so their finger gets ahead on a word such as "little". Read slowly.
