How to use this sheet
- Bring a few real books or texts to the sheet: a storybook, a cookbook, a poem, a newspaper page.
- Have the child give a clue from the text for each answer: talking animals, facts, rhymes, headings.
- Ask what the text is for: to tell a story, to give facts, to persuade or to entertain.
Common mistakes
- Thinking every book with pictures is fiction. Nonfiction books have pictures too.
- Mixing up a biography, written by someone else, and an autobiography, written by the person.
- Thinking an advertisement just gives information. It is written to sell or persuade.
