How to use this sheet

  • Fold paper shapes in halves and fourths before the sheet so "equal parts" is something the child has done.
  • Ask the child to check each shape: are all the parts the same size?
  • Use the words half, third and fourth while sharing food, such as a sandwich or a pizza.

Common mistakes

  • Calling any shape cut into two parts "halves", even if the parts are not equal. Equal size is what makes a half.
  • Thinking a fourth is bigger than a half because 4 is bigger than 2. More parts means smaller parts.
  • Thinking halves must look the same shape. Two parts of different shapes can still be equal halves if they are the same size.
