How to use this sheet

  • Have the child write the hidden question first: what must you know before you can answer?
  • Draw a bar model for each step and label the parts.
  • For problems with a remainder, ask what the remainder means in the story before writing the answer.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping after the first step and giving that as the answer. Read the question again.
  • Ignoring the remainder or rounding the wrong way, such as needing 7.5 buses. You cannot have half a bus: you need 8.
  • Doing the steps in the wrong order. Retell the story in order before working it out.
