How to use this sheet
- Have the child find the subject and the verb of each sentence first.
- Read each sentence aloud and ask "Does it make sense on its own?"
- For joining sentences, have the child try two conjunctions and choose the one that shows the right meaning.
Common mistakes
- Writing a fragment, such as "Because it was raining." It needs a main clause.
- Joining two sentences with only a comma. Use a conjunction, a semicolon or a period.
- Calling a long sentence a run-on. A run-on joins sentences wrongly; a long sentence can be correct.
- Putting a modifier far from the word it describes, as in "I saw a dog on the way to school with spots".
